Eight Oesophagostomum species have been recorded from free ranging primates (more species have been proposed, however, not fully defined), three species have been demonstrated from humans and the following species in African and Asian apes. Some published records are only referred to as Oesophagostomum sp. or 'nodular worm', in both African and Asian apes. Oesophagostomum infection is typical for nodule formation (= nodular worm), eliciting two disease forms (oesophagostomiasis). Fatal cases have been described in sanctuaries, however, data from necropsies of wild chimpanzees showed that granulomas within the mesentery, mural granulomas within the small intestine and colon were responsible for emaciated conditions or diarrhea.
