Quentin Meillassoux se ve svém textu zase vypořádává s důsledky, které měla pro filosofii (a zvláště ontologii) Humova kritika hledání metafyzického základu indukce. Výsledkem bylo, že současná filosofie zcela opustila problém hledání onoho reálného základu spojení jednotlivých faktů, aby se koncentrovala na popis aktuální vědecké praxe provádění těchto indukcí. Ontologická problematika tím byla zcela opuštěna. Proti tomu navrhuje Meillasoux znovu se vrátit k řešení ontologického problému, ovšem zcela jiným způsobem. Ten spočívá nyní v důkazu nikoliv existence onoho reálného spojení, ale naopak v pozitivním důkazu jeho neexistence, které nás podle Meillasouxa přivádí k tezi o radikální kontingenci nejen všech událostí ale rovněž samotných zákonů, jimiž se tyto události mají řídit.

Quentin Meillassoux tackles in his text the consequences, which for the philosophy had Hume’s critique of the searching for the metaphysical foundation of an induction. The result was that contemporary philosophy abandoned this kind of search for the real foundation of the connection between two facts and concentrated upon the description of an actual scientific practice done by an induction. Because of that, ontological problematics has been abandoned altogether. Contrary to that, Meillasoux proposes to get back to the solving of the ontological problematics but in quite different manner. This undertaking consists now not in the proof of the existence of the real connection but quite the contrary, in the positive proof of its nonexistence, which leads us according to Meillasoux towards the thesis of the radical contingency not only of all events but of the very laws, which govern those events.
