Geosiphon pyriformis byl ztracen a žádná další živá kultura neexistovala pro další výzkum. V tomto článku uvádíme, že G. pyriformis může být přiveden zpět do kultur a je k dispozici pro budoucí výzkum.

Whereas in the usual symbiosis the fungus penetrates the plant cells and forms arbuscules within them, in the Geosiphon-Nostoc symbiosis the fungus forms one long fungal cell, the so called bladder and swallows the cyanobacteria within this bladder. The cyanobacteria are photosynthetically active within the fungal bladder and fixate nitrogen, whereas the fungus delivers inorganic nutrients and water to the cyanobacteria. Despite of almost four decades of research on the endosymbiosis and G. pyriformis by Mollenhauer, Kluge, Schüβler and colleagues it was never shown that G. pyriformis forms intraradical structures such as arbuscules and was always seen as an exotic AM fungus within the Glomeromycota. Therefore we submitted a project, to clarify whether G. pyriformis forms an AM or not.
