Benediktinské kláštery tvořily od doby Karla Velikého významné náboženské, hospodářské a kulturní prvky v evropské středověké společnosti. Již na St. Gallenském plánu z 2.-3. desetiletí 9. století jsou zaznamenány funkční okruhy odpovídající těmto posláním. Po celý středověk lze sledovat jejich významné aktivity, které z nich činily mimořádné články osídlení s dopadem na celou společnost.

Benedictine monasteries were from the time of Charlemagne important religious, economic and cultural components of European medieval society. Ever since the 2nd or 3rd decennium of the 9th century in the plan of St. Gallen are taken down functional circuits, which correspond with these functions. The whole Middle Ages, their important activities are to study, which make from them exceptional settlement components with impact for the whole society.
