Ranunculus sect. Batrachium is one of the taxonomically most intricate groups of aquatic plants. We used flow cytometry to gain an insight into evolutionary processes and genome size differentiation. We revealed considerable cryptic diversity, including variation in genome size and chromosome number. The complexity of this group is further enhanced by interspecific hybridization.
