OECD category: History (history of science and technology to be 6.3, history of specific sciences to be under the respective headings)

The main aim of the article is to present geographer Jiří Daneš (1880–1928) and his presence at the Eighth International Geographical Congress in Washington in 1904. Furthermore, the study covers Daneš’s journey to the congress, the congress excursions and his private journeys across the USA. Through the analysis of Daneš’s correspondence to his mother, the article illustrates opinions of a young Czech intellectual, enthusiastic patriot and ambitious scientist on the American society in the era of progressivism. Particular attention is also paid to the establishment of his contacts with foreign experts in his scientific field. In the conclusion of the article, Daneš’s views on the United States are compared with the opinions of Jiří Guth-Jarkovský (1861–1943) who lived in the USA during the same period.
