This paper studies the mechanical performance of lap scarf joint made of Norway spruce (Picea abies L. Karst) fastened using cylindrical English oak (Quercus robur L.) dowel. Within the study, an experimental approach based on European standards EN 383 and EN 26891 has been used. The experimental approach focused on: (1) determination of the load-slip joints moduli (K) and the dowel load-carrying capacity (Py), (2) assessment of the mechanical behavior of dowels in more detail through experimental investigation, and (3) performing a strain analysis of dowels. The joint dimensions were derived from the nominal dowel diameter d = {12, 16, 20, 24} mm with the same length/diameter ratio equal to 3. The mechanical load was induced in tension parallel and perpendicular to grain directions within the main joint components. Determination of the total joints’ displacement and surface strain distribution on the dowels was carried out using the optical technique employing three-dimensional full-field digital image correlation (DIC).
