It would be useful at experimental enteric bacterial infections in pigs to evaluate cytokines (1) local intestinal levels of the chemokine interleukin 8 (low levels show a protective role via attraction and activation of neutrophils, and high levels indicate a cytokine storm), (2) systemic levels of the regulatory cytokine interleukin 10 (its systemic appearance predicts death), (3) both local and systemic levels of the inflammatory cytokine tumor necrosis factor α (a general inflammatory marker high levels indicate a cytokine storm), and (4) local detection of the alarmin high mobility group box 1 (a marker of severity of enteric infection).
