Glutamate (glutamic acid) is the most abundant neurotransmitter in the central nervous system and functions as excitatory mediator to trigger depolarizations of postsynaptic neurons. However, in case of excessive amounts of glutamate after injury, prolonged excitation triggers exaggerated pathological neural response, which fuels more damage until it can no longer be metabolically sustained and eventually causes cell death. The role of glutamate excitotoxicity in the spinal cord injury development is discussed in the article.
