Capillary gel electrophoresis (CGE) is a powerful method for analysis of biopolymers such as DNA, RNA, and proteins by sieving phenomena, according to size (molecular weight). This technique evolved from “traditional” gel electrophoresis but has many advantages, such as automation, high separation efficiency, on-capillary detection, anticonvective nature of the capillary, and array dimension (multicapillary system). An interesting improvement is also miniaturization, lab-on-a-chip should also be emphasized, including two-dimensional separation. All these properties and technical properties are reviewed. Special attention is paid to gels used (polymers), their preparation, and applicability. Particular parts of the chapter are examples of applications of CGE for analysis of real samples. Commercially available resources, such as instruments and kits, are also reviewed.
