Preparation and characterization of photocatalytically active carbon adsorbent and its testing as self-regenerating material for
adsorption/degradation of organic pollutants in water treatment is described. The porous precursors (carbon xerogel and activated carbon) were impregnated with a sol containing photoactive Ti02 species. All samples were studied by electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The photocatalytic activity was characterized in an aqueous solution using phenol degradation under UV light. Using SEM, the presence of both components in the composites was confirmed.
