The invention falls within the field of synthesis of inorganic products and specifically relates to preparation of magnesium silicide at a low temperature. The essence of the process according to the invention is that the mixture of magnesium in the form of microparticles and silicon in the form of particles in a specific ratio is heated to a temperature of 330 to 550°C, wherein the mixture is kept at that temperature for less than 4 hours. And both or only one of the initial substances may contain an admixture of the actual oxides in an amount of up to 10 mol% and/or one or more impurities selected from aluminium, lithium, calcium, zinc, manganese, silver, gold, zirconium, rare earth elements, yttrium, thorium, boron, phosphorus, sulphur, nitrogen, specifically in an amount of up to 25 mol% relative to the the sum of the amounts of silicon and magnesium.
