The effects of average molecular weight (MW) on the fibre diameter of electrospun polyethylene oxide (PEO) have been investigated. PEO with molecular weights ranging from 100 000 to 1 000 000 g/mol was dissolved in distilled water at various concentrations. The rheological properties especially the elasticity of polymer solution were measured and correlated with average fibre diameter. It was observed that the elasticity of PEO aqueous solutions increased with increasing MW whereas the viscosity was kept fixed. Nanofibrous webs obtained at optimal conditions were analysed by means of a scanning electron microscope. The diameter of fibres with circular cross sections increased with elasticity of polymer solution.
