Antičtí autoři jako M. T. Cicero, L. A. Seneca, M. F. Quintilianus a po nich církevní otcové, např. Lactantius, Ambrosius či Isidorus z Hispaly, představují autory a myslitele, kteří formulovali antické a raně křesťanské předstvy o humanitě. Vedle kvality mezilidských vztahů patří od počátku k těmto představám úzké propojení s výchovou a vzděláním. V evropském raném novověku byla zdrojem pro utváření konceptu humanity nejenom přímá četba starších, autorů, nýbrž také nepřímé prameny, to znamená vedle jazykových slovníků různé sbírky citátů, sentencí, výroků, exempel a přísloví, pro ilustraci jsou tu z nich vybrány ty, s nimiž s nejvyšší pravděpodobností pracoval J. A. Komenský.

Classical authors such as M. T. Cicero, L. A. Seneca, M. F. Quintilianus, as well as the Church Fathers, e.g. Lactantius, Ambrosius or Isidorus of Hispala later on, represent those authors and thinkers who articulated the ancient and early Christian ideas of humanity. Beside the nature of human relationships, they had also considered the close link to education and upbringing. In the European Early Modern Age, the concept of humanity largely depended not only on the study of classical authors themselves, but also on other resources such as language dictionaries, collections of quotes, proverbs, sayings, exempla etc. Here we sample those most likely used by J. A. Comenius.
