Studie, zahrnuté v předkládaném svazku, byly shromážděny u příležitosti životního jubilea, devadesátých narozenin Josefa Zumra, jenž se celoživotně věnuje dějinám českého myšlení. Důležitý je přitom u něj jeden prvek, jenž propojuje všechny Zumrovy texty: totiž pojetí dějin české filosofie jako dějin emancipačního myšlení. Tento pomyslný svorník v Zumrově díle je vyjádřen v názvu této knihy. Poukazuje na jeho dvě ohniska a přibližuje systematické i historické rozpětí „mezi estetickým formalismem a filosofií emancipace“. Kniha je rozdělena do šesti tematických okruhů. První oddíl Svár obsahu a formy pojednává o estetickém formalismu a platonismu. Druhý oddíl Setkání pojednává jednak o Patočkových interpretacích T. G. Masaryka, jednak o intelektuálním přátelství Ireny Krońské a Romana Ingardena. Třetí oddíl Surrealismus – formalismus – strukturalismus je věnován postavě Vratislava Effenbergera. Studie oddílu Radikální demokracie a materialismus jsou věnovány myšlení Karla Kosíka, konkrétně pojetí metodologie v Kosíkově uchopení dějin filosofie i filosofie samé. Pátý oddíl nazvaný Lid a avantgarda se dotýká otázek spojených s konceptem emancipačního subjektu v podobě avantgardy a lidu. Závěrečný tematický blok s názvem Filosofie emancipace je věnován uchopení emancipačních tendencí v historickém procesu, současně se explicitně zabývá dílem Josefa Zumra. Knihu uzavírá rozsáhlý rozhovor s Josefem Zumrem.

The present volume has been put together on the occasion of the ninetieth birthday of Josef Zumr, who has devoted his life to studying the history of Czech thought. There is one element that links together all of Zumr’s writing: an understanding of Czech philosophy as a history of emancipatory thought. This unifying bond in Zumr’s thought is captured in the title of the book. It points to the two central focal points of his work, which developed “between aesthetic formalism and philosophy of emancipation.” The book is divided into six thematic sections. The first, the Struggle between Form and Content, deals with aesthetic formalism and Platonism. The second section, Encounters, deals partially with Jan Patočka’s interpretations of T. G. Masaryk, and partially with the intellectual friendship of Irena Krońska and roman Ingarden. The third section, Surrealism – Formalism – Structuralism, is devoted to the figure of Vratislav Effenberger. The studies in the fourth section, radical democracy and materialism, are devoted to the thought of Karel Kosík, and specifically to the concept of methodology in Kosík’s understanding of the history of philosophy and of philosophy itself. The fifth section, entitled the people and the Avant-garde, relates to the concept of the emancipatory subject in the form of the Avant-garde and the people. The concluding thematic block, entitled the philosophy of Emancipation, is devoted to the search for an emancipatory tendency within the historical process. The book is concluded by an extensive interview with Josef Zumr.
