The paper investigates the lengthy and heated debate on the role of Jozef Tiso, the president of the war-time Slovak State, in Slovak history. First, the author presents a brief biography of Tiso, focusing primarily on his ascension to the presidential seat and role in the 1939 splitting of Czechoslovakia, as well as general characteristics of his political conceptions. Further, the author discusses the changing preception of Tiso in after-war Czechoslovakia and his post-mortem rise in prominence in autonomous Slovakia after 1993.
