This study deals with Janáček’s choruses composed between 1873 and 1876, which he wrote in connection with his activities for the Svatopluk Artisan’s Association in Brno. First, it concentrates on new information about the sources of the texts of the choruses Válečná (War Song, JW IV/2, 3), Divím se milému (I Wonder at My Beloved, JW IV/5), and Nestálost lásky (The Fickleness of Love, JW IV/4), then it provides corrected information about performance material and the circumstances of the composition of the chorus Válečná and the cycle Ohlas národních písní (Echo of Folk Songs, JW IV/8, 5, 6). It also covers the dating of the chorus Osudu neujdeš (You Cannot Escape Your Fate, JW IV/9) and of the second version of the chorus Osamělá bez těchy (Alone without Comfort, JW IV/26). On the basis of a critical interpretation of period reports and an evaluation of the sources from the archives of the association Svatopluk, it has been possible to redefine the ideological aims, mutual relationships, and chronology in the whole realm of Janáček’s creativity at the beginning of his artistic career.
