Kniha představuje formy a proměny ženské práce v 19. a 20. století. Přibližuje dobové diskuse a reflektování ženské práce, její vývoj a determinaci genderem, třídou, náboženstvím nebo regionem. Zabývá se otázkou, kam sahají počátky placené ženské práce, jak a kdy vznikaly specificky ženské profese, za jakých okolností a s jakými výsledky se ženy domáhaly vstupu do tzv. mužských povolání a rovného přístupu na trh práce. Zahrnuje rovněž problematiku skloubení profese s prací v domácnosti, s důrazem na fenomén dvojího zatížení, a pohled veřejnosti na profesní aktivity žen. Interdisciplinární přístup a různé úhly pohledu (genderový, třídní a etický) umožnily vytvořit dynamický, do středoevropského kontextu zasazený obraz, v němž se proměňovaly názory na ženskou práci, její status a formy.

The book presents the forms and transformations of women’s work in the 19th and 20th centuries. It introduces contemporaneous debates and perception of female work, its development and determination by gender, class, religion or region. It deals with the question of the origins of paid female work, how and when women’s professions were specifically created, under what circumstances and with what results women were seeking entry into so-called male occupations and equal access to the labour market. It also includes the issue of combining the profession with domestic work, emphasizing the phenomenon of double burden, and the public’s view of women’s professional activities. The interdisciplinary approach and the different perspectives (gender, class and ethics) enabled a dynamic, central European context to create a picture that transformed views on women’s work, its status and forms.
