Kmenové buňky podporují růst endotelových buněk a mají schopnost diferencovat do hladkých svalových buněk. Prasečí cévy (průměr < 6 mm) byly chemicky modifikovány a osazeny kmenovými buňkami kostní dřeně a endotelovými buňkami v podmínkách in vitro.

A confluent layer of endothelial cells on the surface of vessels of small diameter is important to maintain antithrombogenicity and a long-term patency of these vascular prostheses. Endothelial cells can be seeded on porcine vessels after their chemical modification. Mesenchymal stem cells support growth of endothelial cells and are able to differentiate into smooth muscle cells. Porcine vessels (diameter < 6 mm) were chemically modified and seeded with bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells and with endothelial cells in in vitro culture.
