Photonic crystals are photonic structures with many possible applications in optics and photonics. We fabricated 2D photonic crystals on polycrystalline diamond thin layers deposited on a silica substrate. Polycrystalline nature of the material causes that large number of various optically active defects (optical centers) is present inside the layer. Design and dimensions of the photonic crystals were chosen with a goal to enhance the extraction of light emitted by the optical centers. In case of the planar layer, most of light from the optical centers stays trapped inside the diamond layer due to total internal reflection on diamond-air interface. By structuring the surface of diamond into a well-designed periodic pattern, light emission from optical centers can be diffracted into air. We will show that this approach leads to more than 10 fold extraction enhancement of the centers luminescence and that the luminescence is extracted within a narrow solid angle.
