In this study we would like to assess the current issues that are related to the implementation of large-scale archaeological excavations. In particular we would like to underline the importance of research non-rescue excavations for making progress in archaeological research. From the perspective of European archaeology these issues are very broad and therefore the problem will be illustrated based on the background of Czech archaeological discourse concerning the earlier prehistory period.
