We found that illumination with lights of different spectral characteristics affected growth, sequestration of nitrates and phosphates, composition of fatty acids, and long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid accumulation in the eustigmatophyceaean microalga, Trachydiscus minutus. Light emitting diodes (LED) proved to be the best source of light for growth and nitrate and phosphate sequestration over FLUORA and LUMILUX light tubes. Also omega 3:omega 6 fatty acid ratio and productivities of eicosapentaenoic acid and arachidonic acid were highest under LED illumination.
