The developmet of nanofibers has greatly enhanced the scope for preparation of scaffolds that mimic the structure and biological function of extracellular matrix (ECM). Nanofibers formed by electrospinning techniques offer distinct advantages of biocompatibility and biodegradability, versatility of chemistry and mechanical properties. Small diameter that closely matches the sice scale of the ECM, the high surface area-to-volume ratio of nanofibers, optimal pore size and porosity as high as 90%, makes them suitable for cell attachment, proliferation, differentiation and drug loading. Such unique properties of nanofibers scaffolds determine their use in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine (Filova et al.2013, Rampichova et al.2013).
