Větší část knihy spojuje poznání, že mnohé ve středověku bylo jinak, než by se na první pohled zdálo. Soubor dvanácti studií na pomezí více historických disciplín tvoří tři tematické okruhy. První nejvíce souzní s podtitulem knihy. Dvě prostřední studie o inscenovaných devocích a světě divých lidí v lucemburských Čechách se pokoušejí osvětlit zkoumané jevy z více úhlů pohledu. Třetí část zahrnuje etudy/eseje a sondy o roli výtvarných motivů v agitaci husitského období.

Most sections of the book have in common the fact that much in the Middle Ages differed from what might be assumed at first sight. The twelve papers, which cover several historical disciplines, focus on three themes. The first one is most related to the book’s subtitle. The two papers on staged devotions and the world of the wild men in Bohemia during the reign of the Luxembourgs attempt to explain the phenomena from different perspectives. The third section of the book includes papers on and probes into the role of visual motifs in propaganda during the Hussite era.
