Historie archeologické památkové péče i současné zápolení o vytvoření funkčního systému ochrany archeologického dědictví odrážejí obecné tendence směřování společnosti v minulosti i dnes. Příznačný je současný různý úhel pohledu jak na organizaci a možné koncepční přístupy tzv. záchranné archeologie, tak na úlohu jednotlivých aktérů při formování archeologické památkové péče. Progresivní rysy, které se později stanou charakteristickými znaky péče o archeologické památky Prahy i systematického výzkumu její minulosti, lze nalézt již v organizaci pražské archeologie v období mezi světovými válkami.

The history of archaeological monument care and the current efforts aiming at the creation of a functional system which would protect the archaeological heritage reflect general trends in society development in the past and today. The current differing angles of view concerning the organisation and possible conceptual approaches of the so-called rescue archaeology as well as the role of the individual parties shaping archaeological monument care are quite characteristic of this situation. Progressive elements which later became characteristic features of archaeological monument care in Prague and systematic research into its past had already been present in the organisation of the Prague archaeology in the interwar period.
