Juan Caramuel was a polymath whose contributions lie in the fields of theology, mathematics, theory of architecture, military engineering, speculative linguistics, logic, and others. His major contribution in philosophy consists in extending Aristotle's syllogistics and creating a fragment of artificial language based on scholastic Latin encompassing sufficient resources for expressing subtle differences in the meaning of the verb 'is.' There are other important advances: Caramuel expresses the theoretical foundations of a key view in moral theology, that of probabilism. In the debate over theological determinism and human freedom, he attempts to steer a middle way between the two opposing views of Molinism and Banezianism. His understanding of moral ontology, beings of reason, and proofs of divine existence is novel and original. Working within scholastic paradigm, Caramuel thus extends it in several new directions.
