Biomaterials are widely used for replacing irreversibly damaged tissues in the human body. They have to meet requirements for good functioning and long-term durability of the implants, namely biocompatibility, good corrosion and fatigue resistance, wear resistance and biomechanical compatibility. An important requirement of implants designed to replace or interact with bone is a low elastic modulus matching as closely as possible to that of the surrounding tissue.
