Klasická termodynamika je naukou o teple a pohybu a o tom, jak teplo působí na fyzikální a chemické děje. Je založena na čtyřech postulátech, termodynamických větách, které jsou přírodními zákony, jež nelze zpochybnit. Tento text si klade za cíl seznámit čtenáře s historií objevů, které vedly k formulacím termodynamických vět, a s jejich významem. Parní stroje, spalovací motory, chlazení a mražení potravin, vytápění domů, destilace lihovin a další děje mají termodynamický základ. Ať už si to tedy uvědomujeme, nebo ne, termodynamika je nedílnou součástí každodenního života a jevů, které běžně pozorujeme. Po přečtení této brožury by však pojmy teplo, práce, energie a entropie pro čtenáře už neměly být tajemstvím.

Classical thermodynamics teaches us about heat and motion and the influence of heat on physical and chemical processes. It is based on four thermodynamic laws, fundamental laws of nature that cannot be questioned. A brief history of discoveries that led to enouncing of the thermodynamic laws will be given in the present text. Steam engines, combustion motors, cooling and refrigeration of food, heating of buildings, distillation and many other processes are in fact based on thermodynamics. Believe it or not, thermodynamics is a part of our daily life; we can commonly observe phenomena related to thermodynamics. After having read the present text, the gentle reader will be familiar with all those.
