The paper presents a diagnostic technique which is based on measuring the mechanical resistance (FAVG) against penetration of a tool (pin) into timber. Experimental measurements were carried out using 30 spruce boards and moisture contents of 12, 18 and 24%. The test results manifest a very good correlation of the mean force needed for pin pushing through timber with wood density and strength determined using standard samples in compression parallel to the grain. At the same time, the effect of the wood moisture content on the measurement by pin pushing was confirmed.
