Porous gels derived from tri- and di-functional alkoxysilanes as coprecursors through a facile one-pot sol–gel reaction were prepared. These macroporous materials possess high porosity, unusual flexibility and built-in hydrophobicity or hydrophilicity. The prepared silicone-based gels were tested e.g. for quick removal of organic liquids/oils from oil–water mixtures for environmental purposes.
