Comenius' writings contain a large number of passages taken from other authors. But in his own theory he is strongly against the excessive use of so-called authoritates ('authorities') when being used for stylistic purposes only. Such immoderate use reduces the authorities to just opiniones, even praeconceptus, praejudicia. Comenius allows the use of authorities only as testimonia to confirm and support the intentions of authors' own thoughts. In his own practice, he relies on the power of authorities in accordance with the hierarchy of spiritual authority recognized in his time, when on the top is the Holy Scripture, followed by the Church Fathers as the sole bearers of its message; other authors come only in the next row, even if they are his favorite authors.
