Polymer foaming with CO2 is a promising area of research with applications already commercialized and more on the horizon. In batch experiments, polymer film absorbes supercritical CO2 at the temperature adjusted above the glass transition temperature of the polymer, Tg, until saturation is reached. Rapid depressurization is then applied, causing gas supersaturation and allowing
cell formation. The polymer foaming is an interdisciplinary field reaching to polymer rheology, mass transport, thermodynamics, and nucleation, and computational approaches enable insight into foaming phenomena, while experimental techniques are coming that can provide reliable data. Most of theoretical effort is foccused on phenomena of cell nucleation and cell growth.1-3.
