The chapter explores the neo-humanistic idea of 'cultivation' in some detail. It reflects its origins as well as its transformations during the 19th Century. Hereafter it also demonstrates that this idea became topical within the conception of Man as a being, which freely unfolds its own capacities within the process of cultivation and which refines its individuality.
