Synthesis of prodrugs in a series of 5-azacytosine acyclic nucleoside phosphonates was described including their antiviral activity data. Interestingly, the antiviral activity was found in prodrugs of 1-[2-(phosphonomethoxy)ethyl]-5-azacytosine (PME-azaC) despite the fact that the parent free phosphonic acid is antivirally inactive.
