In the paper of Darling et al. (2014), "Mitigating grain growth in binary nanocrystalline alloys through solute selection based on thermodynamic stability maps'' an interesting model of grain size stabilization in nanocrystalline systems is presented. However, several important items with respect to its applicability for real systems are not considered, which can be shown to have a strong influence on quantitative predictions. The effect of solid solubility limit is ignored and the effect of phase transformation in iron based systems is not considered in the model calculations. Therefore, some of the presented values do not reflect the physical reality which makes some of the quantitative results presented in that paper questionable.
