In this contribution we investigate different carbon composites by Raman and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy measurements. A detailed study of deposition processes, and morphological and chemical properties of the carbon composites are supported and correlated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements. Coexistence of nanocrystalline diamond, which is itself a composite, with graphitic phases from the substrate significantly modulate the character of the Raman spectrum. For such composites, the laser intensity as well as used laser wavelength are crucial parameters which modulate the background signal. In contrast to Raman measurements from sample volume, the XPS technique detects the signal coming only from ~10 nm from the sample surface. Due to this limitation the standard XPS technique is not able to investigate the whole sample volume.
