This article reflects on the meaning of European institutions' response to the Greek debt crisis. It argues that the debt crisis reveals a series of contradictions at the heart of developments in European integration, which have taken the project far from its initial (and still imagined) values and goal, and which threaten the entire project with disintegration. At the same time, the Greek debt crisis also provides the continent with a challenge which, if met, could result in a new, more egalitarian and sustainable path to European integration.
