Kniha přináší, jako první publikace v českém jazyce, základní přehled dějin františkánských misií v Číně od prvních katolických vyslanců do Mongolské říše v polovině 13. století až do Velké persekuce na konci 18. století. První část tvoří rozsáhlý historický úvod, seznamující čtenáře s vývojem styků mezi křesťanskou Evropou a Čínou v uvedeném období a přinášející i jejich chronologický přehled. Encyklopedická část je věnována především významným františkánským misionářům a jejich činnosti, velká část je přirozeně zaměřena na novověké misie. Čtenář v knize najde rozsáhlé informace o příslušných náboženských řádech i o církevním členění mongolské i novověké Číny v rámci františkánské administrativy. Jednotlivá hesla jsou doplněna rozsáhlým výběrem pramenů a literatury. Publikace se tak může stát důležitou pomůckou profesionálním religionistům, etnografům, historikům, filosofům, orientalistům a dalším zájemcům, které zajímají dějiny římskokatolické církve ve východní Asii.

This publication provides an overview of the Franciscan missionary activities in China since the first Catholic envoys to the Mongol Empire in the 13th century up to the Great Persecution at the end of the 18th century. It includes some important figures regarding this order, as well as significant administrative units of Franciscan China, and also the necessary concepts. The first part consists of an extensive historical introduction, familiarizing the reader with the development of relations between Christian Europe and China in that period and providing their chronological overview. The encyclopedic entries are devoted to prominent Franciscan missionaries and their work; many of them are naturally focused on the modern missions. The reader will find extensive information on the relevant religious orders of the Roman Catholic Church, as well as the division of Mongolian and modern China within the Franciscan administration. The entries are complemented by a large selection of primary and secondary sources. The publication can become an important tool for professional religionists, ethnologists, historians, philosophers, orientalists and general public interested in the history of the Roman Catholic Church in East Asia.
