Hydrogenation of 2-methylpropene over commercial Platinum catalyst was studied in the packed bed microreactor. The presence of heat and mass transfer limitations was assessed by means of common dimensionless criteria and some experimental diagnostics tests. The analysis results pointed to presence of diffusional limitations, therefore only a limited data set under the kinetic control regime was collected. At certain conditions, the self-sustained spontaneous and reproducible oscillations of 2-methylpropene conversion were observed. Catalyst bed temperature well reflected the course of 2-methylpropene conversion oscillations. The oscillations showed exceptionally long periods ranging from 11 to 22 hours depending on the space velocity. We explain the presence of oscillations as a result of complex interaction between the exothermic reaction, heat transfer and a reversible decrease in the catalyst activity. Possible mechanisms for temporary catalyst activity decrease were proposed.
