The plate elements of ordinary lamella flanges always exhibit unavoidable initial geometrical imperfections, therefore a gap between them always occurs , into which the loaded lamella is pressed under load . As the loading in a bridge structure is many times repeated, the aforesaid deformation is also many times repeated, and consequently a pronounced cumulative damage process is generated in the structure, which must necessarily influence its limit state. The authors studied, via experiments simulating the situation on a new large bridge in the neighborhood of Prague, this phenomenon, paying special attention to the initiation and propagation of fatigue cracks in the boundary longitudinal fillet welds connecting the individual lamellas, which can eventually imperil the safety and the useful lifetime of the bridge structure.
