We used a comparative approach to assess the potential for range expansion from low to high latitudes in the Colorado potato beetle, Leptinotarsa decemlineata. The ecophysiological traits related to overwintering were compared in CBP and other native northern species of leaf beetles. While the northern species accumulated large amounts of differenet sugars and polyols with probable cryoprotective functions, none were detected in CBP. This lack of cryoprotectant accumulation could probbaly explain the difference in cold tolerance between the species and also suggests that a lack of physiological capacity could slow further latitudinal range expansion of CBP.
