Přemítání o smrti, záhrobí i onom světě již od pradávna zaměstnává věřící všech náboženství, což platí bezezbytku rovněž pro muslimy. Přitom nikde v islámu nedoznal rozpor mezi literou islámského práva a zavedenými zvyklostmi takové hloubky jako právě v problematice funerální. Jedná se tedy o významné „kolbiště“, kde se po staletí střetávají i míjejí různé výklady islámu. Kolektivní monografie Smrt, hroby a záhrobí v islámu s podtitulem Poslední věci člověka pohledem muslimských pramenů se zaměřuje právě na tento neklidný terén středověkého i soudobého muslimského myšlení.

Like in other religions, death, graves, their visitation and diverse ideas about the Hereafter play a crucial role also in Islam. In this regard, the practices of most Muslims clearly contradict the statements of the normative Islam. Despite the centuries of Islamic jurists' effort to submit existing manners and customs to the Islamic law, we can argue that nowhere in Islam the gap between the normative and the popular religiosity reached such depth. Such contradictions were manifested throughout the Islamic history and we can still observe controversies around the graves all over the Islamic world. The question of graves and their visitation repeatedly becomes the “battlefield” among followers of different Islamic streams, not only the Salafis and Sufis. The Last Things in Islam can be examined from different points of view, among others as a legal problem, as a distinctive part of the Muslim folklore or as a challenging subject of the Islamic historical writings, etc.
