Kniha vypráví historický příběh lidové kultury, všímá si jejího vývoje a dějinných proměn, čímž se liší od dosud vydaných encyklopedií, které dané téma člení do jednotlivých hesel. Je první velkou dějinnou syntézou očištěnou od ideologického balastu. Lidová kultura je tu formována křesťanstvím, ať už jde o normy chování, svátky, slavnosti, písně, stravu, odívání, výtvarné umění, obyčeje a zvyky rodinné nebo pracovní. Nechápe lidovou kulturu nacionálně, ale zahrnuje také tradiční kulturu německého obyvatelstva i kulturu židovskou.

The book is tellling the story of the folk culture, have its historical transformations for one´s object and this approach makes the difference between former encyclopedic work based on entries and published formerly in the framework of the discipline. This is the first synthetic work based on traditional culture without ideological undertone. The traditional culture is interpreted from the perspective of christianity when dealing with rituals, festivities, customs, food, costumes, craftsmanshift, music and dance culture or social behavior. The folk culture in Czech Lands is perceived as multiethnic including the traditional culture of German or Jewish people.
