Deuterons generated on the front side of a thick CD2 foil irradiated by the PALS laser systém with intensity of ~ 3x1016 W/cm2 were exploited as drivers of the 7Li(d,n)8Be nuclear fusion reaction. The deuterons accelerated up to MeV energies upstream the laser beam impinged on a LiF catcher target, producing there D-Li neutrons with energy > 14 MeV. Two dominating bursts of deuterons of mean energies 200 keV and 400 keV were recognized, which correspond to deuteron beams that initiated emission of fast neutrons in two bursts observed by scintillation detectors. The observed arrival times of fast neutrons at five scintillation detectors positioned around the target chamber were analyzed to determine the energy of both the fusing deuterons and fusion neutrons. The energy spectrum of deuterons was also estimated from the time-resolved charge density of ions derived from the ion collector signal.
