Zásadní příspěvek J. E. Purkyně v oblasti rostlinné fyziologie, dílo De cellulis antherarum fibrosis ..., obsahuje několik originálních konceptů a pozorování – např. morfologie prašníků, koncept nitkových buněk a zavedení pojmů „endothecium“ a „exothecium“. Obecně Purkyňovy práce o rostlinách, ač nenápadné, dokládají, že nebyl jen fyziologem či histologem živočichů, ale že jeho skutečný zájem byl mnohem obecnější a odvážnější: pochopit nejzákladnější principy života pomocí zkoumání klíčových procesů pohybu a rozmnožování ve vztahu ke struktuře živých těl.

The main contribution of J. E. Purkyně to plant physiology, the book De cellulis an­therarum fibrosis…, contains several origi­nal contributions – e. g. anther morphology, the concept of fibrous cells and the defini­tion of „endothecium“. Generally, Purkyně’s work on plants, though inconspicuous, shows him as not only an animal physiologist and histologist, but also as a scientist with broader interest: to understand the basic principles of life through the relation between the structure and function of living bodies.
