Gasification of municipal solid waste was performed in the reactor equipped with a DC plasma torch (set up to 400 A and 290 V). The plasma torch involves the combination of a gas stabilized cathode part and a water stabilized arc part. Argon plasma is formed in the cathode part and then enters the part, where the arc is stabilized by a water vortex. Produced plasma features outstanding parameters such as very high temperature (approx. 18 000 K) together with low mass flow rate (around 0.3 g/s of H2O + 0.2 g/s of Ar). The conjuncture of these parameters causes very high gasification temperature and low concentrations of unwanted species. The plasma torch is mounted to a water cooled reactor that has ceramic 400mm insulation and inner volume of 0.22 m3.There is the inlet of gasified material in the top part of the reactor and the outlet of produced gas in the side of the reactor.Wall temperatures ranged between 900°C and 1 500°C during experiments.
