We present a possible approach for modelling of mechanisms of the formation of modulated structures within Ni-Mn-Ga martensite as well as of transitions between them at the level of continuum mechanics, combining the so-called adaptive concept of martensites with an additional selection mechanism for the periodicity of the modulation. Although being built on very rough assumptions, the model seems to feature many aspects of the experimentally observed behaviors of the modulated phases, in particular the irregularities in the atomic positions and the hysteresis of the transition temperatures.
