Cílem tohoto článku je připomenout 95. výročí narození Harryho J. Bendy (1919-1971) někdejšího doyena světové indonesistiky a československého rodáka, který zásadním způsobem přispěl k rozvoji studií jihovýchodní Asie ve Spojených státech. Benda jakožto Žid uprchl před nacistickou hrozbou na Jávu, kde strávil sedm let života. Tato životní etapa ho ovlivnila natolik, že se později stal kapacitou na sociální a politickou historii Indonésie. Ve svém výzkumu se zabýval rolí islámu v indonéské společnosti, obdobím japonské okupace, rozpadem koloniálního řádu a dekolonizačními procesy, jakož i komunistickým hnutím v jihovýchodní Asii. Byl autorem řady knih a studií, přičemž největší ohlas zaznamenala jeho monografie The Crescent and the Rising Sun (1958) neboli Půlměsíc a vycházející slunce.

This article intends to commemorate the 95th birth anniversary of Harry J. Benda (1919––1971), a doyen of Indonesian studies of Czechoslovak origin, who tremendously contributed to the development of Southeast Asian Studies in the USA. Benda fled the Nazi threat to Java, where he spent seven formative years, which affected his future career in such a way that he became an accomplished expert of social and political history of Indonesia. His main research topics included the role of Islam in Indonesian society, the end of the colonial era, the period of Japanese occupation, communism as well as decolonization processes in Southeast Asia. He authored or co-authored a number of books and dozens of articles, with The Crescent and the Rising Sun (1958) being his most acclaimed and quoted masterpiece.
