The results of preliminary tests of heavy metals and some other elements volatilization from sludge ash by microwave enhanced thermochemical treatment are presented in the paper. Comparison of removal efficiency under conventional and microwave heating conditions is presented as well. The method is ineffective for Cr and Ni regardless the heating source. For some elements (Cd, Cu, Mo, Pb, Zn) the maximum removal efficiency is comparable for the both heating sources. Under microwave heating conditions some elements which are not volatile under conventional heating conditions (e.g. Al, Fe, Mn, V) can be partly removed. However, further experiments with advanced experimental design will be necessary to confirm the promising results of first tests and further explore capabilities of the method of microwave enhanced thermochemical treatment.
