The parting of ways between Brentano and Marty in the philosophy of language is the result of a tension between two philosophical principles: ‘empiricism’ and ‘objectivism’. Brentano believes that Marty takes a position that will ultimately entail the rejection of empiricism, with the most devastating consequences, while Marty is of the opinion that Brentano opts for a view that will lead to subjectivism, with consequences equally devastating. I argue that this tension between these two principles should prove to be focal in the on-going discussion of the Brentano - Marty relation.
